Sentient Awareness Journeys

Book: Discourse on Chuang Tzu

Chuang Tzu promoted carefree wandering and becoming one with “Tao” by freeing oneself from entanglement through the Taoist principle of non-causative action.

Excerpt from book Discourse On Chuang Tzu / Chapter 22 Sentient Awareness Journeys in the North

Nieh Ch’üeh asked P‘i-i about Tao. P’i-i replied, “Settle your body in the correct position, focus your vision on oneness and the harmony of Heaven will come upon you. Call back your knowledge, maintain spontaneous harmony in your bearing, and the spirits will come and dwell within. Te will increase and flourish abundantly and Tao will dwell within you. Your gaze will be as innocent as that of a new-born calf which does not seek to question the ‘how’ or the ‘why’ of things.” Before P’i-i had even reached the end of the sentence, Nieh Ch’üeh fell into a sound sleep. Feeling immensely pleased, P’i-i left and walked away, singing to himself:

The body turned to a withered corpse,
The mind became dead ashes,
In full knowledge of reality,
Free from insistent reasoning,
Oh, dim, dark, and mindless is he!
Absent, in his mindlessness for dialogue or debate.
What kind of man can this be!
